The Canned Pump is a centrifugal pump, close coupled to a Canned Motor in such a way that there is no dynamic shaft seal, no couplings and no ball bearings. The motor is cooled by the pumped liquid and the sleeve type Bearings are lubricated by the same liquid. This eliminates the need for external lubrication.

The stator of the driving motor, which is usually three phase squirrel cage induction motor, which is hermetically contained in a stator containment that consist of an external frame tube, out board & inboard end plates and the internal cylinder liner. The rotor which is welded on the shaft, is also encapsulated with a non magnetic liner. Both stator liner (Stator Can) and rotor liner (rotor can) are seal welded at both ends, and does not allow any part of the motor to be exposed to external environment or internal pumped liquid.

The can represents a static atmospheric seal and separates the rotor compartment from the stator compartment, such that levels of sealing of < 10 -7cc /sec are achieved. Dynamic canned motor pumps are flame poof and are cmri certified to EEx-d 11b T4(Ex) ds, IS: 2148-2004 AND weather proof protection : IS:12063-1987, IP-67.


Installation and Space Requirements

Dynamic canned motor pumps are characterized by extreme compactness and consequentially low space requirements, because the pump and motor form integral unit, neither base plate nor special foundations are required, our units are not at all sensitive to distortion caused by the piping, this is of special importance if heat transfer oils are to be pumped at high temperatures., this allows the pump to be installed in otherwise inaccessible places for e,g in ships and nuclear power stations. being noiseless and vibration free.

Due to more stringent health and safety regulations canned motors are beneficial replacement, if properly installed and operated, canned motor pumps render technical processes maintenance free and safe and contribute to increased productivity and reduced maintenance costs.


Design & Construction Of Dynamic Canned Motor Pumps

The Canned Motor Pump Design is very simple & has all standard features of conventional centrifugal pumps.

The Pump is categorized in three sections- The Pump, the canned motor and the bearings.

The Pump is designed as per Hydraulic Institute standard. having back pull out design, keyed impellor, automatic axial thrust balancing, self venting .flanges confirming to ANSI class 150,300 std. ASA CLASS 150,,ISO-2084 PN16,IS-6392 PN16 ,API. The impellor is either enclosed or semi open type with maximum mechanical strength for high efficiency and low NPSH, back vanes are provided for reducing axial thrust, the impellor is positively locked on the shaft and cannot get loose under reverse rotation.

The temperature class of motors is class H & Class C, Insulation of the windings are provided according to the class specified and internationally sourced for compatibility with IEC Motor specification.

The Bearings are journal type and are selected for having excellent self-lubricity property, the bush bearings made of carbon graphite, silicon carbide or tungsten carbide are provided, the load capacity is also one important criteria for bearing selection. Different grades of carbon grahites are choosen for chemical resistance, low friction coefficient, high heat stability, wear resistance and good compatibility with metal sleeves.


Safety

Canned Pumps are normally designed and manufactured to have secondary Containment.

Stator liner with a back up ring works as the primary containment and the outer motor frame work as the secondary containment, the secondary containment will prevent the liquid from leaking out into atmosphere for long enough to detect the failure of the primary containment.

There are safety options available for safety equipments are available such as bearing wear indicator, dry run protection unit, thermostat embedded in the windings, RTD on recirculation line and so on.

Dynamic Canned motors are provided with option of bearing wear indicator electronic type or Mechanical Type. The LED Displays the bearing health in three zones. Green is for Good, Amber is for Not Good and Red indicator is for bad bearings, which need immediate replacement. Alarm signal is also provided along with motor tripping device incase the bearings are not replaced inspite of crossing danger zone. Since, the indication is continuous and real time, it gives the operator an idea when the maintenance work is needed. A light Indicator is also provided on the electronic device to indicate the direction of rotation of the motor, as nothing can be seen from outside the pump visually for motor inspection.

A micro thermostat embedded in the hot spots of the electrical windings will trip of f the motor on electrical overload.

Dry Run Protection device , being a current monitoring device , trips of the pump in the event of drop in the flow of liquid to unsafe limits, other conditions , such as rotor locking, cavitation , air locking ,single phasing etc. can be detected.
